![]() Dumping truckloads of trash in the playground shows how much the Housing Authority cares about Black youth. Photo: Stephanie Hughes I looked at the Boys and Girls Club and noticed the truck in the yard dumping what appeared to be a dumpster. I then walked over to see how and what they were doing and noticed the chain which kept the gate locked had been cut. An employee of COO (Communities of Opportunity) Beautification asked an employee of the Housing Authority, "Why are you doing this?" The employee replied, "This is SFHA property. Housing can do what they want." We continued to plead and they continued to refuse to stop the dumping, even being aware that youth use the facility for programs. In 2005, Mayor Gavin Newsom spoke of his personal commitment to the overhaul of Alice Griffith; some cosmetic improvements were made and the Opportunity Center opened. Alice Griffith, also known as Double Rock, located just south of the Hunters Point Shipyard, is home to more than 250 families. Newsom has highlighted Alice Griffith again in the past year in discussing his plan, Hope SF, which, much like Hope VI, would demolish the public housing and replace it with mixed-income housing.
