Wholistic Health Month PDF Print E-mail
by Minister of Information JR
Tuesday, 01 January 2008

This month is wholistic health month because, like the saying goes, "your health is your wealth." It is important for the Bay View to focus on this right now because many have just finished doing the family thing over the last couple of weeks, and rarely do Black families teach each other about healthy living. This has to change, realizing that most of our ancestors were brought here in chains under slave ships and were forced to eat food that would usually be thrown away, which means that for hundreds of years we were acculturated to eating trash.

Now that many of us have a choice whether we are going to eat that ham or beef sandwich or candy instead of that salad, or drink sodas instead of water and fruit juice, we have to become more knowledgeable about what certain things do to our body. And this is not something that is just limited to Black people, considering that people in the U.S. are some of the most obese people in the world.

With high blood pressure, high cholesterol, heart disease, and diabetes being major killers in our communities, it's on us to educate ourselves, our families and our communities about what healthy living is all about. We felt like this was the perfect topic to start off ‘08.
