A feast of events to celebrate our Black past, present & future PDF Print E-mail
by Minister of Information JR
Tuesday, 12 February 2008

With half of the month gone, I just wanted to inform readers about some of the more interesting events that will be going on during Black Past, Present and Future Month. First off, Thursday, Feb. 14, at UC Berkeley in 652 Barrows Hall from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be a Black Panther event featuring former BPP Minister of Culture Emory Douglas and former BPP Deputy Minister of Information Elbert Big Man Howard among others.

Friday, the Prisoners of Conscience Committee will be showing "Audio Rebellion" at Guerrilla Cafe on Shattuck and Cedar in Berkeley from 6 to 9 p.m. Later on that night, X Clan will be performing at the Mezzanine in downtown San Francisco at 10 p.m., and KRS-1 and Jahi and the Life Band will be performing in Berkeley at the Shattuck Down Low.

Saturday, Feb. 16, It's About Time will be hosting a Black Panther history program and reception at the West Oakland Library, 1801 Adeline St., from 1 to 4 p.m., hosted by Elbert Big Man Howard and highlighting two current exhibits, one on Huey P. Newton there at the West Oakland Library and "Educate to Liberate: Schools of the Black Panther Party" at the Oakland History Room of the Main Library, 125 14th St., Oakland. That evening, Akinyele Sadiq and his ensemble, The Troublemakers Union, play international music for human rights, a benefit concert for the Bay View, at 8 p.m. at Station 40, 3030-B 16th St. at Mission in San Francisco, across from 16th Street BART.

On Monday, Feb. 18, 4-7 p.m., Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. will be speaking at San Jose State University after a showing of "Audio Rebellion" at an event sponsored by Hip Hop Congress.

And, last of all, on Wednesday, Feb. 20, at 6 p.m., POCC: Block Report Radio will be hosting a discussion between POCC Chairman Fred Hampton Jr. and legendary Asian activist Yuri Kochiyama about El Hajj Malik el Shabazz, formerly known as Malcolm X, and the history of the Black Liberation Movement and its principled coalitions, at the Black New World, 836 Pine St. in West Oakland's Lower Bottoms.

All but the concerts are free, so we are urging our readers to participate in these informative, revolutionary gatherings that offer you an immense feast of information about the history and politics of the Black Panther Party and up to date information about how you could get involved with some of the POCC's community campaigns right now.
