All my adult life I have lived in some of theee most desirable neighborhoods in whatever city I’ve lived in. I work, and I currently live in the chic Elmwood-Rockridge “gourmet ghetto” district of Berkeley. Although I don’t write nearly often enough (and my friends keep pushing me to formally write more), I’ve been published in several venerable political/literary journals, in addition to other smaller and larger prominent publications (including a special features commmentary in the San Francisco Chronicle) in this country (and Canada). I’ve been interviewed on the PBS Newshour, on numerous radio programs, and even on British television about sociopolitical/sociocultural issues. My friends are politically *CONSCIOUS* activists &/or academics at every level — from the grassroots to nationally prominent professors (like Cornel West, Michael Eric Dyson, Ishmael Reed, Richard Majors, Maxine Hong Kingston, Ling Chi-Wang, Makeda Graham, Hatem Bazian…, just to name a few — who would regard you, “UN-Consciousness”, as a *JOKE*). Furthermore, Blacks and whites tend to commit crimes in approximately the same percentages. But, Blacks/Browns who commit crimes are more likely to be arrested, are more likely to be prosecuted, are more likely to be charged with a felony for the same –or even *lesser*– crime, are more likely to be convicted, are more likely to be sentenced to prison, are more likely to be given longer prison sentences, and are more likely not to be able to attain a job when they get out THAN A WHITE PERSON. In fact, Blacks with *no* criminal record are unemployed in higher percentages than whites *with* a criminal record: i.e., IT’S STATISTICALLY EASIER FOR A WHITE PERSON WITH A CRIMINAL RECORD TO GET A JOB THAN A BLACK PERSON WITH *NO* CRIMINAL RECORD.

Oh you mentioned the lives of the police that should be “cherished” — BUT YOU DIDN’T SAY *ANYTHING* ABOUT THAT LOVELLE MIXON’S LIFE BEING CHERISHED. You know Mixon’s family and friends and the 500 people who showed up at his funeral cherished his life too — and he was trying to get a job (trying to improve himself) for whose important appointments his parole officer kept missing.

The cops out in Binghamton, New York, took the *WHITE* MALE GUN MANIAC *alive*, who gunned down and killed 3 cops there. The Oakland cops were so itching to kill Lovelle Mixon (and who knows how he might have been provoked by the cops who are always eager to provoke anyone else Black/Brown) that two (and almost three) more cops got killed rushing in, thinking they were some kind of TV supercops, instead of waiting for back-up like the New York cops did.

WHEN THE PIGS START CHERISHING *OUR* LIVES (wantonly killing, maiming, beating, tasering, torturing, otherwise brutalizing, abusing, and harassing us), THEN (given other important behavioral improvements on their part) WE MIGHT START CHERISHING THEIRS.

I agree whole heartedly. Yes there is frustration in the black community about inappropriate police behavior. Yes many police officers disrepect and verbally and sometimes physically abuse people in that community….and yes there are some good police officers who are trying to do a difficult job…..but that doesn’t mean that you celebrate the deaths of officers who were brutally shot down while making a traffic stop by a coward. It’s not as if they were wrongly beating him for no reason and in self defense he grabbed their gun and defended himself. No, he shot them down in cold blood and I don’t care if they were white, black, brown or yellow. My heart goes out to them and their families. All human life should be cherished.

Yes this tragedy should be a catalyst to discuss the role of policing in predominately poor minority communities and the problems that arise…but all the racist name calling and the glorification of this horrific act makes me realize there is plenty of blame to go around.

You should also consider emailing a letter to the editor, or a guest commentary, to opinion[at]BerkeleyDailyPlanet.com so that they reach a predominantly white readership too. The BDP is distributed in Berkeley and Oakland, and is, of course, also published online. It gets a very large readership — you know, because it comes out of Berkeley.

The limit for letters is 400 words; the limit for guest commentaries is 1,000 words.

You should try to get it in as soon as possible well before Wednesday so they have time to include and place it in their layout — the Daily Planet comes out every week on Thursday.

(Just one recommendation: in a formal commentary don’t use a lot of CAPS in your body text. Formal publications generally don’t like that and won’t formally publish anything with a lot of body text caps. And keep your paragraphs relatively short, like you did.)

The BDP is apparently allowing at least a few authentic Black voices and we need to add to that — to counterbalance all the (to put it politely) stuff in the Bay Area corporate media.
