Several major Black broadcasters are calling for a National Black Out Day to maintain the momentum of the Jena 6 protest, when 100,000 people - 98 percent of them Black - descended on the little town of Jena, La., to demand justice. "This is our chance to take a stand and make our society take us seriously as a people and race," writes Regina Evans of Biloxi, spreading the word by email. "I took part in the Jena 6 march," she adds. "We all can play a part," states one of many emails pouring into the Bay View. "Please spread to at least five other people and ask them to spread the word too." Here's the plan: Make no purchases at all on Friday, Nov. 2, and no major purchases the day before or after either. Fill your gas tank before Nov. 1 and not again until Nov. 4. "This is the second phase from the Jena 6 march," says another emailer. "Many people are facing situations like the Jena 6 and politicians keep ignoring those who elected them. We may not be big money, but our money counts too." "I think if we start putting our money where our mouth is, people in this country will take us more seriously," writes another. Popular columnist Jim Clingman of www.blackonomics.com adds these words of wisdom: "While we are ‘Blacking Out,' we should also be ‘Blacking In.' It is not enough simply to ‘show' white folks how much impact our daily dollars have; we must also show ourselves by spending some of the money we do not spend with others to buy something made or done by our brothers and sisters. "As we take money out of the pockets of white folks and corporate America, we should also put money into the pockets of our own people. On that day, Nov. 2, every Black person who follows the directive of not spending should make an effort to buy something from Black folks. They should join the Blackonomics Million Dollar Club (BMDC).
"Our efforts cannot be entirely negative; they must be positive as well - for US, our people. Then we will most certainly get the attention we are looking for from the establishment, and it will respond accordingly because it will know that we are serious about self-determination and self-reliance." |
