Dr. Asa G. Hilliard III, an educator and Africana studies pioneer, died Sunday, Aug. 12, while at a conference in KMT, which is also known as Egypt. Born on Aug. 22, 1933, he was one of the founders of the Association for the Study of Classical African Civilizations. His yearly study tours of KMT were legendary. He taught for 18 years at San Francisco State and has an impressive list of published work. Visit http://www.africawithin.com/hilliard/asa_hilliard.htm for an extensive vitae and http://www.ajc.com/metro/content/printedition/2007/08/14/obhilliard.html for an obituary. I'm certain there will be celebrations of his life here, so stay tuned. I will post information as it become available online at my website www.wandaspicks.com.

Update on Charles Platt
Charles Platt, who is at CSP-Solano, will be moved to CMF-Vacaville in November. Again, thanks to everyone who was able to help convince prison authorities not to transfer this very sick young man to a prison so far away from his family that they would be unable to visit him.

Black August
An inmate at CSP-Solano, Charles Platt (J-72525), is suffering from a degenerative disease that affects him cognitively and physically. Because it takes two men holding him steady so that he can comfortably and safely move, he often skips meals because he can't get out of his bunk. A mutual friend says he is "skin and bones." CSP-Solano is not wheelchair accessible.
